How to involve your mom in a wedding you are planning and paying for?

As a wedding planner I am often presented with unexpected questions, but one I get all the time is "How do I make my mom feel like part of the wedding when my fiance and I are planning and paying for it ourselves?" So many couples are handling all of the wedding preparations themselves, but want to show their love and appreciation for their parents, especially their moms.

Below are some simple ways to bring mom into your big day, whether or not they have been very involved in the planning process.

  1. Hire a day of wedding coordinator. Mom will know that all aspects of the wedding are being handled by the coordinator and feel free to spend time with the bride and groom without stress or worry.
  2. Let mom give a toast. Typically fathers give toasts at weddings, but there is no reason mom can't give one too.
  3. Ask her input. You don't always have to do what she says, but in the days approaching the big one get her opinion. You never know, it might be right.
  4. Borrow something from her wedding. Whether it is something big like her veil or something small like diamond earrings, she will appreciate the gesture and you will get to wear a beautiful heirloom.

No matter how old you are or where you are on life's path, every mom will appreciate your efforts to involve her in your big day.
